Happy New Year
Well, I didn't make it to update before the new year. Have been a little bit under the weather since Sunday. Dennis came down with sore throat and cough on Saturday and I started to get the sore throat on Sunday evening. Don't think I caught it from him because it was too soon after, but we have been out more among different groups of people lately. Have not slept well because of the drainage at night but today seem to feel some better. The weather has been pretty warm but very high winds several days this week. I think it is to be somewhat mild (for January) for at least the next couple of days.Last night we went to big New Years Eve service at church. At the beginning of the service there is a processional with children carrying balloons to celebrate all the baptisms at church in the past year. They fasten them to the rail up by the baptismal font. Also, anyone who had a loved one pass away during the past year can also process with a red rose. One of the pastors reads all the names of those baptized and their pictures are put up on the screens. There is then a special part of the service to remember all those who have passed away during the past year. The members names are listed in the service folder and they read those names, and then anyone who has lost a loved one (member or not) can come forward and place a rose in one of several vases by the altar. I had called the church office on Monday to reserve a rose, so I placed a rose for Mom. During this time a soloist is singing the song "Safely Home" by Steve Green. It is a beautiful song. You can find the lyrics on line if you google it. I was doing just fine until I was almost back to where we were sitting and then I lost it for just a little bit and got a bit choked up. I think the lyrics got to me. The end of the service is closed with the singing of the Hallelujah Chorus and anyone who wants to sing just comes up to the front of the church (music is provided). I have done it a couple of times in past years but did not last night because of the cold and sore throat. Church was pretty full, but then again, I think it usually is one New Years Eve. We do not have services on New Years Day.
After church we went to some friends' house to see in the New Year. Not far from home, so that was good. Some of us played dominoes (Mexican Train) and some of the guys just visited. Had played Mexican Train once before and it is sort of fun. We actually stayed until about 1:00. Couldn't sleep so went to my recliner and that was better because the drainage wasn't so bad. Actually slept fairly well. Dennis went up to a guys house to either take some car parts or pick something up. It is up in the mountains. He went today because the guy is leaving for Florida soon. I could have gone along but since he was going early I opted to get the extra rest. Then I watched the Rose Parade. I remember how much Mom always enjoyed watching it.
Not much else planned for today. So, just want to wish one and all a Happy New Year!!
one comment:
I listened to the song, Safely Home, and you are right – it is a beautiful song.
