Last Weekend of Summer

After a week of very nice weather, it seems to be continuing.  Had a short downpour this afternoon, and it did make the temperature drop to around 60 degrees.  It has been a fairly busy week.  Tuesday we had our pictures taken for the church directory.  We didn't order any, but had the picture taken so it would be in the directory.  It helps the newer pastors and others.  I know I refer to the directory quite often to try to put a face with a name.  Then on Tuesday evening we had voters' meeting.  Arranged the picture taking so that we would only have to make one trip.

The rest of the week has been rather routine.  Worked outside one day.  There will still be a lot of cleanup of flowers, etc. but right now they are still blooming.  I usually wait until after a frost to do all that.  Yesterday there was a deer laying down inside our fence.  I left it pretty much alone until it looked like it was going to go over and munch on my tomato plants and then I chased it away.  There were some other deer on the outside of the fence, including about three young ones.  I love to watch them.  Most of the hummingbirds  have already migrated south, but there are still a couple of them that come to the feeder.  They will all be gone in a week or two.

Today I made peach jam and a peach cobbler and also froze some peaches.  Used Mom's cobbler recipe.   A friend gave us some peaches from their tree. They are really nice and sweet.  Really good, too, for a snack or on cereal.   Well, that's about it for now.

We’ve had a couple of deer in our back yard too. They like to jump the fence around my garden. Never saw were they had eaten anything though. I guess they were just investigating. I tried to get a picture one night. I went back in to get my camera and when I came back out, they were jumping across the creek. I guess they are camera shy. I made some peach jam last year (got the peaches at Shipshewana) but I must not have done it right because it didn’t thicken up. It tasted ok though.

Mine didn’t thicken either. I went on the Internet and got a “remake recipe” from Kraft Foods. Was supposed to do a test batch first with 1 cup of the jam and see if it sets up. It involves using another batch of Sure Jell and adding more sugar. I went ahead and did all of it because otherwise it would have been sitting out until tomorrow. This morning it appears to be a little thicker. They said that if fruits are too ripe they lose some of their natural pectin. I thought the peaches were about right but they were pretty juicy. This happened to me one other time and it was with peaches. I think if I make any more jam with peaches, I may have to use the cooked method although I like the taste of the freezer jam better. You probably did yours right, too, but maybe it was the ripeness of the peaches.

Peach jam – my favorite. We don’t get deer in our backyard but we get a lot of rabbits. Last weekend though, when were driving home from the campground we did see a deer go across the road ahead fo us. When we got closer we could see two in the field and both were bucks. I had never seen a buck out in the wild before.

We don’t have deer here at all. I used to see them sometimes when I was helping Gene do corn in the fall. They would hide in the corn and then when you got close with the combine they would run out. Saw some nice one. Did you change the look of your blog.
